New research from UK operator EE has revealed some startling home truths about exactly what snacks the UK favours while watching things on the phone.

The important survey revealed that as restrictions lift, 80% of Brits imagine they’ll be watching more videos while out and about, and 54% claim to watch a TV show or film on their smartphone at least once a week. But the real weight of the research centres around what they shovel into their gobs whilst doing so – and the results might shock you.

It’s cheese and onion crisps.

In fact, crisps in general were the most popular snack with 41% of the vote, with cheese and onion the most preferred flavour – controversially beating salt and vinegar and ready salted. The least favourite option was apparently a pie, an unlikely train snack we’d venture, the unpopularity of which EE surmises may be due to the increased likelihood of generating greasy fingers, which 45% of those surveyed said was their ‘biggest snack bugbear’ when staring at a video on the phone.

“With restrictions lifting and Netflix available in our Full Works plans – travelling, waiting for the bus and commuting all give us the perfect time to catch-up on TV and films via our smartphones,” said Alistair Wilson, Director of Devices & Partnerships at EE. “However, having the right snack to accompany it is critical, so that’s why we surveyed the nation to see what people think is the ultimate mobile munch to complement their viewing experience when on the move.”

So now you know. Important research indeed, despite the usage of the unfortunate term ‘mobile munch’. But with regards to the wider ethics of watching the latest blockbuster on your phone, we’ll let Mulholland Drive and Blue Velvet director David Lynch have the last word.
